Onam is the harvest festival of the prettiest state in India (in the whole wide world) called Kerala. Onam is just a fun happy festive time for every keralan. Be it the flower arrangements, colourful and flavourful food or the games played on the day, it is one of the best times of the year. A vegetarian feast ( ഓണസദ്യ ) with coconut featuring in most of the curries is a must.
In uk our household puts together a small onam each year. After my son was born, onam has a whole new meaning for us. It is an opportunity to remind him of our heritage and our culture.
This year onam fell on a monday and we decided to celebrate it on the sunday before. Although the weekend was pretty hectic with my son's school meetings and extra activities, not to mention our work stuff especially my first appraisal coming up, I was unsure how much I can put together. Somehow it all worked well.
Most of the curries I have posted in the blog before. The new ones, I will post their recipes very soon. Watch this space.
Sambhar (സാബ്ബാറ് )- Spicy lentil with mixed vegetables - find my recipe here
Parippu (പരിപ്പ് )- Mild lentil soup with ground coconut - Recipe coming up soon
Cherupayar ularthu (ചെറുപയർ ഉലർത്ത് )- Recipe coming soon
Beans mezhukkupuratti (ബീന്സ് മെഴുക്കുപുരട്ടി )- Beans with onion and green chilli - Recipe coming soon
Carrot thoran (കാരറ്റ് തോരന് )- Carrot stir fry with coconut - Recipe here
Avial (അവിയൽ )- Mixed vegetable with coconut - Find my recipe here
Koottukari (കൂട്ടുകറി)- Chickpea and potato with coconut - Recipe coming soon
Thakkali pachadi (തക്കാളി പച്ചടി) - Tomato and onion in a yogurt sauce - recipe coming soon
